MSELECT is looking to hire a Senior Drilling Engineer for an international oil operator in Basra, at least 7 years overall and in the role of Drilling Engineer of 5 years is a mandatory requirement, fluency in English and Arabic is a must. 

Job summary 

The Senior Drilling Engineer reports to the Drilling Engineering Manager. The role will be responsible for supplying engineering and operational support to the ongoing drilling campaign, project managing research, implementation of discreet wells initiatives and championing on going optimization work in the field drilling campaign.  

Details include; ensure programmes are written and executed in adherence to the subsurface SOR, recognized oilfield best practices. The SDE shall prepare, present and / or participate in drill the well on paper exercises and pre-spud meeting. Monitor daily operational performance and assist the Drilling Superintendent / Team Leaders as required. Review and or endorse reports from the service companies such as end of well reports, programmed or failure reports. Lessons learned capture and cascade to other rigs in the field to help optimize activities shall also be a key and central role.  

The individual will work closely with other drilling engineers within the team and mentor / coach as requirements dictate. A strong working relationship with the subsurface, base management, reservoir engineering and wells operations team is essential

Key Responsibilities  

Key roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Capture, analysis, implementation & distribution of lessons from the day rate operation.

  • Optimisation identification, justification and implementation.

  • Attend and present at pre spud meetings. Presentation material should include but not be limited to lessons learned from other turnkey and day rate operations.

  • Train, mentor and develop ROO junior drilling engineers.

  • Interact with subsurface team on SOR development and subsurface requirements

  • Ensure the Rumaila Well Delivery Process is adhered to in full.

  • Initiate and or participate in audits to validate our service companies SMS & technical/operational procedures.

  • Ensure sufficient equipment ordered and or in stock for ongoing rig operations

  • Review and / or endorse service company documents when COMPANY input required.

  • Ensure service company documents adhere to qualitative expectations.

  • Ensure service company programmes comply with ROO standards.

  • Facilitate delivery of vertical, deviated and high angle drilling programs for allocated rigs.

  • Delivery of safe and environmentally sound drilling engineering suggestions to queries sought.

  • Ensure well handovers, well acceptance documents, end of well reports and routine communications are delivered in a timely manner.  

  • Ensure filing is conducted of all daily / end of well reports and or paperwork.

  • Ensure relevant lessons learned, NPT analysis, and optimization recommendations are cascaded to the turnkey in a clear and concise fashion.

  • Monitor and coach staff & contractors in an international safety culture and expectations.

  • Assurance of the technical integrity of the operations and compliance with in-country law, corporate policy, international standards and guidelines.

  • The identification and application of value enhancing, innovative and new technologies

  • Arrange and facilitate contractor performance improvement meetings as and when required.

  • Help the Rumaila greater wells community with contract preparation, evaluation, performance / KPI monitoring / tracking and compliance.

  • Initiate and or contribute to technical improvement projects.

  • Initiate and or contribute to engineering research projects.

  • Daily activities shall include but not be limited to, participating and contributing in operational daily meetings, updating directional profiles, track and monitor zonal isolation documentation. 

  • Conduct or participate in root cause analysis on incidents or accidents as circumstances dictate.  

Criteria & qualifications

  • Have worked within the drilling industry at least 7 years overall and in the role of Drilling Engineer of 5 years is a mandatory requirement.

  • Educated to at least degree level (B.Sc) in an engineering, preferably petroleum or mechanical is required.

  • Team player, fluent in English language with strong communication skills is essential.

  • Experience working for an international major operator preferred.

  • Experience developing drilling procedures and programs for directional wells required.

  • Experience in pad drilling campaigns preferred.

  • Experience with drilling software programs such as Landmark, Compass required.  

  • Detailed knowledge of drilling & completion design, engineering and planning is essential

  • Knowledge of tendering and evaluation of drilling contracts preferred.

  • Experience working in a remote / desert location in a multicultural environment is preferred.

  • Middle East experience would be required.

  • Land drilling experience required.
