Job Description

MSELECT is seeking to hire a local national Social Work Director to work with our client, a local charity organization, for their Center camp for IDPs near Akre, in the Dohuk Governorate. Must be a compassionate, confident, dynamic and independent program manager with an interest in making a strong impact on program participants and in building capacity of junior staff. Fluency in Kurdish and/or Arabic as well as English, Bachelor or Master’s degree in sociology, psychology, social work or nursing, and 3 years of relevant work experience in counseling, social work required. At this time, the job requires the SW Director to work in one Center, however, over time, the SW Director may be asked to expand activities and perform at other centers in other camps. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the Program Director in management of the Center and project/activity development and implementation, providing technical expertise and local, in-country, cultural knowledge, as well as act as a bridge to local partners, staff, and participants.
  • Develop protocols and materials for client in-take assessment, counseling, and referral services for the Center, in consultation with Program Director, Camp Management, KRG Department of Health and other NGOs and the UN offices, and train case workers on these protocols.
  • Develop an outreach and community engagement plan for camp residents and potential participants, and oversee implementation of plan, including training junior staff. 
  • Ensure all of the Center’s social work approaches are consistent with best practices, and reflect ongoing learning in this displaced community.
  • Create and maintain a welcoming and safe environment within the Center that reflects awareness and understanding of the different religions, cultures, and experiences in the camp.
  • Conduct needs assessments with clients and deliver counseling, when appropriate.
  • Facilitate and lead effective group sessions, and trainings for clients/participants.
  • Support development and utilization of a camp-specific referral pathway for SGBV cases.
  • Understand and deliver services consistent with organization’s policies and approaches for SGBV, and pursue appropriate training and collaboration with other organizations.
  • Utilize SGBV tools and systems to record information about clients accessing the services, in line with the principle of confidentiality, and utilize aggregate information to improve service delivery.
  • Conduct training, supervise, and build the capacity of junior case managers to ensure they are applying best practices and are delivering high quality social services.
  • Act as the senior case manager by identifying available services and coordinating referrals based on the wishes and consent of the client.
  • Develop and oversee activities for women and girls at the Center to support their well-being, growth, and empowerment, and develop and maintain work plans to achieve activities.
  • Participate in relevant camp, UN Cluster, and Department of Health meetings.
  • Provide survivor-centered and age-appropriate psychosocial support to all clients accessing the Center ensuring strict adherence to core GBV guiding principles (safety and security, confidentiality, respect).
  • Advocate with partner organizations inside and outside the camp and their staff to provide confidential services to clients of the Center, in accordance with their wishes and GBV guiding principles.
  • Utilize SGBV data management tools and systems to record information about clients accessing the services, in line with the principle of confidentiality, and utilize aggregate information to improve service delivery.
  • Support related activities within the camp.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with all organizations, women’s committee(s) and other community-based groups working in the camp to facilitate referrals and support related and/or joint activities, while upholding the organization’s programming and standards.
  • Complete activity and other requested reporting.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor and/or Master’s degree in sociology, psychology, social work or nursing.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience in counseling, social work.
  • Experience in working in the social sector, preferably with IDPs or refugees.
  • Strong belief in human rights and gender equality.
  • Good interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
  • Good diplomatic and persuasion skills.
  • High standard of spoken and written Kurdish and/or Arabic; ability to communicate in English.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Be able to work in a stressful setting and adapt quickly to changing environments.
