The ISO 14001:2015 Awareness Course is designed to introduce you to the basics of setting up an EMS—from understanding the areas of the commitment of your top management to learning how to implement a life cycle perspective in accordance to ISO 14001 structure. Get up to speed on the essential requirements of a what factors you should consider when documenting information required by the standard in implementing your company’s existing EMS and familiarizing you in the commitment required in achieving an EMS if starting from the beginning.

This course is designed to provide an overview of an Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001 principles and standards.

  • Discuss a step-by-step process to successfully set up an EMS

  • Share the risks that affect compliance

  • Review management team responsibilities in operating an effective EMS

  • Share experiences of EMS system failures and corrective measures are taken

The Trainer

Reza Khaleghi is a qualified environmentalist with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management Systems and MSc in Environmental Monitoring for management. Reza is a Practitioner member of IEMA and Specialist member of The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management. Reza’s has spent 14 years in the oil and gas industry as environmental advisor developing Environmental Management Systems and project managing Environmental Impact Assessments for international operators such has SINOPC corporation for West Africa assets as well as corporate social responsibility manager for Afren PLC for the Middle East and North Africa region, delivering sustainable projects to the local community. Reza is the deputy HSE manager and environmental advisor for HKN Energy Ltd Kurdistan Region overseeing the company’s environmental compliance and management system development.


Course outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core elements of ISO 14001

  • Understand how to apply the basics of ISO 14001 requirements to an existing or new developing EMS

  • Be able to identify gaps in EMS and address them in accordance with the standards

  • Effectively communicate


Course Methodology

The course is presented by a series of Powerpoint presentations split over 3 evening sessions, as well as a short video, open group discussions, activities to stimulate learning and make the course interactive to delegates. Course materials will include a copy of ISO 14001:2015 standards, presentation, and training materials for final day exercise.
